What Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight Is About
Embeth Davidtz's first film as director, from 2025, is adapted from Alexandra Fuller's memoir and set in Rhodesia in 1980. Bobo, eight years old, grows up on her family's farm and tries to understand with a child's mind what is happening in the last days of the war that ended colonial rule. The film's difficult choice is to make its narrator a white settler child and to relay racist speech without censoring it: Bobo repeats everything she hears, and the viewer sees where it comes from. Davidtz also plays the mother. Lexi Venter's naturalness carries the film. Because the account stays bound to a child's view, the political context is deliberately given incomplete. Who it's for: viewers interested in films reckoning with colonial history and in literary adaptations. Who it's not for: anyone distressed by racist language relayed directly, or wanting an explicit political frame.
