What Dr. Knock Is About
Saint-Maurice is a quiet village whose inhabitants are so healthy that the local doctor has almost no work. That ends when Doctor Parpalaid retires and hands the practice to Knock, who before treating anyone persuades everybody that they are ill. Nobody resents him for it. They adore their physician, and the village grows prosperous by turning itself into one large hospital. It comes from Jules Romains's 1923 play, which Louis Jouvet first staged and whose title role he plays here. Guy Lefranc's 1951 version is a remake of the 1933 film in which Jouvet had already played Knock.
