Dust To Dust

Rodrigo and Rocco are cousins and nothing alike. Rodrigo is middle class, agreeable, no trouble to anyone; Rocco writes for an independent magazine, fights constantly with his father and fits nowhere. The families gather for their grandfather's birthday. The celebration does not go to plan, and the two cousins find themselves on the road together. Juan Carlos de Llaca's film belongs to the younger Mexican cinema of the post-2000 years. It uses the family gathering as comic material, but its real interest is the distance between generations: the grandfather's world, the fathers' expectations, and two young men who fit into neither. Osvaldo Benavides and Rodrigo Cachero play the cousins, with Ana de la Reguera completing the cast. Who it's for: Viewers who like the lighter vein of Mexican cinema, road movies, and family comedy. Who it's not for: The character work stays on the surface and the humour rests on local reference. Some scenes will land flat without that context.
