What Earth, Wind & Fire (To Be Celestial vs. That's the Weight of the World) Is About
Questlove's documentary is about the group Earth, Wind & Fire. It was made with access to their archive, and recording sessions, stage designs and written notes are brought together for the first time. The interest lies in the world the group built. Maurice White's idea of joining music to spectacle, the stage costumes and the symbols on the album covers are treated inside the narrative; the music is presented not on its own but as an entire design. Questlove works as a musician too and is known in his documentaries for taking pieces apart one by one. Those who speak include members of the group and well-known figures describing its influence. Who it's for: those who like American music of the seventies and eighties and music documentary. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a critical band history; the documentary rests on the archive and is largely celebratory.
