What Echoes of the Past Is About
A lawyer acting for the German government works against the reparations claims Greece has brought over Nazi crimes, travels to Greece and meets one of the surviving witnesses of Kalavryta. The event itself: on 13 December 1943 the German 117th Jäger Division killed the male population of Kalavryta, including boys under fifteen, 477 people that day. Across the whole operation the number of civilians killed reached 696. The divisional commander gave the order after partisans executed 78 German prisoners they were holding. Nicholas Dimitropoulos's film is fiction built on that record. It was also Max von Sydow's last role.
