What El Cementerio de los Elefantes Is About
In La Paz there are rooms known as elephant cemeteries, where alcoholics go to drink one last time, or more precisely to drink until they die. Juvenal is thirty-three and has been drinking since he was fourteen. The film follows the seven days he spends in one such room, called the Presidential Suite, with his childhood and youth returning in between. Tonchy Antezana's Bolivian production draws on the writing of Victor Hugo Viscarra, who wrote from the street, and never once tries to make poverty beautiful. It runs eighty-one minutes and is not easy, but it is not invented either.
