Beritan Balcı What Elaha Is About
Elaha is twenty two, from an Iraqi Kurdish family in Germany, and has been persuaded that she must restore her supposed virginity before she marries. She cannot put together the money for the operation, starts looking for other ways, and along the way puts the real question to herself: why does she have to do this, and for whom? In her first feature Milena Aboyan interrogates not the woman but what is being demanded of her, and refuses to flatten the family into caricature. It screened in the German cinema section at the Berlinale, and Bayan Layla was awarded for her performance.
