What Elippathayam Is About

Unni, the last male heir of a decaying feudal family in rural Kerala, hardly ever leaves the house. The order built on land is breaking up, his sisters are looking for their own ways out, another society is being built outside; Unni accepts none of it and closes in a little further with every change. The rat trap set in the house is the film’s title and its central image: a man who does not see what is happening outside and has fallen into his own trap. In Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s hundred and fifteen minute Malayalam film, Karamana Janardanan Nair plays Unni and Sharada and Jalaja play his sisters. It was shot in 1981 and won the Sutherland Trophy, the British Film Institute’s award for the most original film.
