What Encounters of the Spooky Kind II Is About
Abao, a poor teahouse worker and student of martial arts, is engaged to his employer’s daughter Little Chu and is trying to protect her from the advances of the wealthy, repellent Master Shi. The rivalry between the two men stops being an ordinary contest and turns into supernatural warfare: Shi brings in a malevolent sorcerer, and Abao meets a benevolent female ghost. Ricky Lau’s film belongs to the Hong Kong strain that runs comedy, fighting and ghost story at once, moving back and forth along the distance between fear and a joke. Sammo Hung leads, with Lam Ching-ying in the cast. The film runs a hundred minutes and dates from 1990. Although the title makes it look like a sequel, these films are not direct continuations of one another but separate examples of the same vein.
