What Evil Is About
In 1950s Sweden a boy beaten at home is expelled from school and sent to a boarding school. There is violence there too, this time institutionalised. The film centres on his attempt not to hit back; the narrative gets its tension from how long that can hold. The authority the school grants its senior boys is shown as the system itself. Mikael Hafstrom directed, adapting Jan Guillou's largely autobiographical novel. It was nominated for the foreign language film Oscar. A real warning: it contains domestic violence and systematic abuse at school, shown in long scenes.
