What Ewa Wants to Sleep Is About
Ewa is a student who has arrived in a new town to start school, and when the women's hostel turns her away she is left with nowhere to sleep for the night. The town turns out to be a strange one: thieves, swindlers and small-time troublemakers walk the streets, and the police are practically on first-name terms with them. Over one night, helped by a friendly young policeman called Piotr, the town becomes something out of a fable. Tadeusz Chmielewski's 1958 Polish comedy makes no attempt at realism; it is light, dreamlike and paced like silent cinema. It is also remembered as the film that made Barbara Lass.
