What Extenuating Circumstances Is About
Gaetan, a retired judge known for his severity and called Monsieur Maximum for handing down the heaviest sentences, grows bored of idleness and sets off for the seaside with his wife. But his chauffeur has his mind on his girl and the car breaks down; the couple find themselves in the country, in a plain bistro frequented by former convicts. Once the ice breaks the judge has a better time than he ever expected, and even tries, without letting on, to steer his new friends straight. That his identity will come out is only a matter of time. Arletty and Michel Simon appear in Jean Boyer’s eighty seven minute French comedy; it was completed in 1939.
