What Fear Is About
Svetla, a widow living in a village on the border between Bulgaria and Turkey, has just lost her job. Because of where the village lies, refugees pass through it often, and nobody knows what to do about these people. One day Svetla meets a refugee from Africa, and the meeting changes both her life and the way the village looks at her. The title describes the state of those who stay rather than those who arrive: fear here is less a feeling than a habit. The account builds the matter not through speeches but through two people trying to understand each other. Svetlana Yancheva appears in Ivaylo Hristov’s hundred minute Bulgarian film, completed in 2020.
