What Felix and Otilia Is About
Young Felix moves into the house of his eccentric uncle and is drawn at once to Otilia, a woman who lives by rules of her own. The house is crowded and everyone in it has some reckoning to do with an inheritance; love is caught in among those reckonings. The film gives the decaying mansion and the relationships inside it as one order rotting at the same time. The account does not explain Otilia; it leaves her in the view of Felix, who is trying to understand her, and keeps that uncertainty to the end. It was adapted from the novel by George Calinescu. Julieta Szonyi and Gheorghe Dinica appear in Iulian Mihu’s hundred and forty six minute Romanian film, completed in 1972.
