Feminist Fathima

Fasil Muhammed's 2025 Malayalam film follows Fathima in the coastal town of Ponnani. Her husband Ashraf controls every detail of the household. When their son wets the old mattress, Fathima wants to replace it. The film turns that small request into a struggle; the narrative does not wait for Fathima to formulate a position and takes her stubbornness as enough. The cast are mostly inexperienced and from the region. The tone is humorous while the pressure is realistic. The close is small and clear. Who it's for: viewers of Malayalam independent cinema and women-centred narratives. Who it's not for: viewers for whom the depiction of control inside a family would be difficult.
