Feng Shui

Chito S. Roño's 2004 Filipino film is about the luck brought by a charm. Joy hangs the Chinese mirror called a bagua that she found on a bus in her house and her life improves fast: money arrives, things go well, her husband's debts are cleared. She soon notices that after every piece of good news someone she knows dies, and that the manner of each death follows the Chinese zodiac. There is no getting rid of the charm either; it has to be passed to someone, and that means another death. The film builds its horror on a moral dilemma: would you accept harming someone else to save your own family. It was a large box office success in the Philippines and became one of the best known works of local horror. Who it's for: viewers who like Asian horror and stories about curses. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding jump scares and violent deaths.
