What Fisherman's Friends: One and All Is About
Nick Moorcroft's 2022 British film continues the first and follows what happened to the Cornish fishermen's choir after their unexpected success. The album sold, the concerts came; but the group cannot make a second album, and the pressure of fame divides them. The story is drawn from a real choir, and the songs are the film's best quality: traditional sea shanties, sung in chorus and unadorned. Its limit is that the conflicts resolve easily and the emotional line is predictable. James Purefoy's performance is balanced. The picture of the town is over-idealised, and the real problems of the fishing economy do not enter the story. Who it's for: viewers who like sentimental British comedy and folk music. Who it's not for: anyone who has not seen the first film, or wanting a story outside the template.
