Food and Shelter

Rocío is raising her son Adrián alone in Jerez. She has no work. The rent is three months behind and the landlord has gone to court for an eviction. Her benefits claim is stuck for want of a document. She tells her son none of it: every morning she sends him to school, puts food in his bag, looks fine. She does not eat herself. As the month goes on the options run out. What the film is about is not poverty but the energy spent hiding it. Juan Miguel del Castillo's first film; ninety-three minutes, with Natalia de Molina as Rocío, who won the Goya for best actress for it. The film is about the wave of evictions in Spain after the 2008 crash, when hundreds of thousands of households were put out of their homes.
