For Whom the Bell Rings

An industrialist sunk in debt reaches the point where he has nowhere left to hide from his creditors. Kostas, who works for him, proposes a strange way out: the man will stage his own death. In a scene that makes it look as though a large stone were tied round his neck, he is taken to have fallen into the sea, the newspapers print the news of his death and the creditors pull back; debtors begin to pay and orders pick up. All this while the man is hiding in a shed in the garden, and only those who ring the bell in a set pattern may come in. But when a supplier sets out to marry the supposed widow, matters get tangled. Kostas Voutsas plays the lead in Orestis Laskos’s eighty two minute Greek film, completed in 1968.
