In the documentary ten Canadian women describe living as lesbians in the forties, fifties and sixties. Discovering the cheap romance paperbacks of the day, their first affairs, the pain of breaking up, the bars they went to, police raids, how men reacted and the rules within the butch and femme roles are all talked through in turn. The account gives this not as a list of grievances but as the memory of a life that was built. Between the interviews and the archive footage run four short dramatised passages taken from a romance novel of the period. The eighty five minute Canadian documentary by Aerlyn Weissman and Lynne Fernie was completed in 1992.
