What Force of Evil Is About
Joe Morse is an ambitious lawyer whose client runs the city's numbers racket. The plan is simple: break the small betting banks and pull them all into one hand. The only obstacle is Joe's older brother Leo, who wants to stay small and keep the arrangement he has with his own staff. What one brother does to the other is the real subject. Polonsky wrote the dialogue close to verse, and the New York streets and staircases read like fate. He and John Garfield were blacklisted shortly afterwards and both careers were cut off.
