What Four Daughters Is About
Adam Lemp is a musician, his four daughters all play, and the house runs on music and on each other. Every one of the girls has a decent, reliable young man in her life and everything looks settled. Then Mickey Borden turns up, a sardonic, unkempt young composer who has decided the world is against him, and the balance goes. Michael Curtiz's 1938 film starts as a family comedy and ends somewhere else entirely. The event is John Garfield: it was his first film, he changes the temperature of it from his first scene, and he was nominated for an Academy Award. Claude Rains plays the father and three of the daughters are played by the Lane sisters.
