Führer Ex

Two close friends in East Berlin in the 1980s try to get over the wall, are caught, and end up in prison. Inside, survival runs through picking a side, and one of them is pulled into the neo-Nazi scene; once the wall comes down the distance between them only widens. Winfried Bonengel came to this a decade after making a documentary about a German neo-Nazi leader, and built the film on the memoir of Ingo Hasselbach, who founded the country's first neo-Nazi party and walked away from it five years later. Hasselbach co-wrote the screenplay. This is a drama rather than a documentary, and the prison stretch is brutal, but what it is really chasing is how a person ends up there at all.
