What Gagarine Is About
Cité Gagarine is a real housing estate on the edge of Paris, in Ivry-sur-Seine. Yuri Gagarin himself came to its opening in 1963; in 2019 it was condemned for demolition. The sixteen-year-old Youri in the film is named after the same cosmonaut and wants to be an astronaut. When the demolition becomes known he tries to save the building by turning it into a space station. Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh shot in the real block before it came down. The film moves between social realism and fantasy without asking pity for the estate.
