Giovanni Falcone

Palermo in the 1980s, where the courthouse assembles the first anti-mafia pool of judges ever formed. In the same years two mafia families go to war over control of the smuggling routes, a war that runs for a decade and fills the city with bodies. Giovanni Falcone and his colleagues try for the first time to bring the mafia into court as a single criminal organisation, and what stands against them is not only the mafia but the reluctance of the institutions themselves. Giuseppe Ferrara made the film barely a year after Falcone was killed, with Michele Placido in the role. Falcone died in May 1992 at Capaci, when a bomb under the motorway killed him, his wife and members of his escort. Two months later his colleague Paolo Borsellino was killed by a car bomb.
