Aleksander Fogiel What Giuseppe in Warsaw Is About
Travelling home on leave from the Eastern Front, the Italian soldier Giuseppe Santucci has his machine gun stolen when partisans hit the train. Too frightened of the consequences of returning without it, he stays in occupied Warsaw in 1943 and installs himself in the flat of Maria, whom he suspects of taking it. Maria is genuinely in the resistance, planting stink bombs in German shops. Her brother Staszek paints cheap pictures for sale and would much rather be left alone. Stanisław Lenartowicz took the risk of telling the occupation in a comic key, and by the end both the Italian and the painter find themselves in the middle of the resistance. Zbigniew Cybulski is in the cast.
