Goodbye

Gayatri dies suddenly and her four adult children return to their father's house for the funeral. Harish is strict about tradition and wants every rite performed properly, while the children have drifted from him and from each other, his daughter Tara most of all. Vikas Bahl builds it as a comedy of mourning: the arrangements, the meaning of the rituals, and nobody being able to cry properly. Amitabh Bachchan plays the father and Rashmika Mandanna, in her first Hindi film, the daughter. Its best question is what the ritual is for, the dead or the living. The tone lightens too far at points and the emotional centre still holds. Who it is for: viewers who like Indian films about family grief that run humour and pain together. Who it is not for: anyone wanting restraint.
