Goodbye Christopher Robin

A. A. Milne comes back from the First World War unable to write and moves out of London to the countryside. Winnie-the-Pooh comes out of the games he plays with his son Billy in the woods. When the books explode the boy, under his own name as Christopher Robin, becomes a figure known worldwide, and it is he who pays for it. The film ends with the two of them only able to make peace after Billy comes back alive from the Second World War. Simon Curtis directed. Domhnall Gleeson plays Milne, Margot Robbie his wife Daphne and Kelly Macdonald the nanny Olive Rand. Carter Burwell wrote the score. It was made for under 3 million dollars and took 7.2 million worldwide. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 64 percent. The Economist wrote that it struggles to balance wartime tension and childlike wonder. It won several festival prizes including the Heartland Film Festival's Truly Moving Picture Award. Who it is for: viewers curious about the real cost behind a childhood classic. Who it is not for: anyone after Pooh nostalgia. The film is about how a lovely story crushed a child, and it offers no consolation.
