Greyhound

Greyhound (2020) follows a destroyer captain on his first command during the Battle of the Atlantic. The convoy has to cross the mid ocean gap where air cover cannot reach, and there are U boats underneath it. Almost the entire film takes place on the bridge: sonar reports, course orders, exhaustion. Tom Hanks wrote the screenplay. The source is C. S. Forester's 1955 novel The Good Shepherd. Hanks wrote it and stars in it, and his Ernest Krause is a fictional character. Filming began in March 2018 aboard the USS Kidd, moored at Baton Rouge in Louisiana. The Kidd is a genuine Second World War destroyer, now a museum ship, and the actors trained on her. Sony had it scheduled for cinemas in June 2020. The pandemic shutdowns pushed the release back indefinitely and then cancelled it. Sony sold the rights to Apple for a reported 70 million dollars and it went out on Apple TV+ on 10 July 2020. It runs 92 minutes. Good for: procedural war storytelling, technical detail aboard ship, and films that stay short and focused. Less good for: there is barely any character here; you learn almost nothing about Krause's inner life. The U boats remain targets rather than people, and the digital work shows in places.
