What Growing Up Smith Is About
In 1979 a family arrives from India and settles in a small American town. Their ten-year-old son falls for the girl next door and tries to be like the men of the town: cowboy boots, baseball, everything his father does not approve of. His father, for his part, does not want him forgetting where the family came from. The boy cannot satisfy either side. Frank Lotito's film tells the familiar story of being an immigrant child in a comic register. Roni Akurati plays the boy and Anjul Nigam the father; Nigam is also one of the film's producers. Jason Lee plays the neighbour the boy takes as his model. The telling does not reduce the father to a rigid figure; it shows what he is afraid of losing too.
