In the Taiwan of the fifties, a young woman who works as a bar singer and has a child with no acknowledged father marries Mr Bi, a man much older than she is, and settles in a small town up north. The film follows the boy growing up: from a confident child to an adolescent who has lost that confidence, and from there to an adult building a life of his own. The tension between those native to the island and those who arrived from the mainland works its way into the house too. Hou Hsiao-hsien and Chu Tien-wen wrote the screenplay, and the film is counted among the works that began Taiwanese New Cinema. Chen Kun-hou’s hundred minute production was completed in 1983.
