What Gunda Is About

Shankar hauls cargo for a living. When he crosses Bulla and his men they kill his father and his sister, and revenge becomes the only work he has left. Kanti Shah's 1998 film flopped and was pulled from cinemas, then found a second life in the mid 2000s passing around college networks in India until it became one of the country's best known cult objects. What carries it is Bashir Babbar's dialogue, written so that every character speaks in rhyme, and a total absence of irony in the playing. Audiences supply the irony now, quoting the lines from memory, but very few films from that year are still being watched at all.
