Apollon by Day Athena by Night

Emine Yıldırım's 2024 Turkish film follows Defne, newly working as a psychic. Raised in an orphanage, she travels to Side to look for her mother. Three ghosts accompany her: a revolutionary, a sex worker and an ancient priestess. The film does not make the trio a joke; the narrative uses each of them carrying their own period and crosses that with Defne's past. The ancient site takes wide space in the images. The tone sits between comedy and the fantastical. The production is independent in scale. Who it's for: those who like Turkish independent cinema and comedy with fantastical elements. Who it's not for: viewers expecting realist storytelling; the film runs on the supernatural throughout.
