What Guru Is About
Rajiv Anchal's 1997 Malayalam film opens in a village where Hindus and Muslims live together. A group acting for political gain, disguised as Muslims, causes trouble at the temple, and rioting breaks out between the two communities. Raghuraman loses his family in it and joins an armed group to take revenge. What the film is actually about is not which side is right but how a person can be blinded: the story is tied to H. G. Wells's country of the blind and to Plato's allegory of the cave. Its target is the provocation itself, not either community. It was India's submission for the 70th Academy Awards and the first Malayalam film sent to the Oscars.
