What Haathi Mere Saathi Is About
Raju grows deeply attached to the four elephants that saved his life; for him the animals are not a pet interest but part of his family. But after he marries and has a child, his wife begins to fear the situation and asks him to choose: the animals or the family. The man is caught between the two, and every decision he takes costs him one side or the other. The film tells the bond between animal and human in a language that speaks to children as well, yet it does not tie its ending to an easy place. It became one of the most watched works in Indian cinema of the seventies. Rajesh Khanna plays the lead in M.A. Thirumugham’s hundred and seventy minute Indian film, completed in 1971.
