What Hanging Garden Is About
From outside, the Kyobashi family looks perfectly happy. They even have an agreement: nobody hides anything, every question gets an honest answer. Everyone in the house knows the agreement collapsed long ago, and the mother, the father, the daughter and the son are each living a life somewhere else entirely. The flat is in one of those identical Japanese housing blocks on the edge of the city. Toshiaki Toyoda adapted Mitsuyo Kakuta's novel and staged the family drama almost as a thriller. Kyoko Koizumi's mother stands at the centre of it. What it is about is not some catastrophe but how long everyone can keep up the performance of getting along.
