What Hanu-Man Is About

Hanu-Man opened on January 12, 2024, during the Sankranthi festival weekend with modest expectations; it went on to gross roughly 300 to 350 crore rupees worldwide, becoming the fourth highest grossing Telugu film of 2024 and the first Telugu film of that year to cross 200 crore in net domestic collections. Director Prasanth Varma has said the film was made on a comparatively modest budget (reported in the 40 to 55 crore range) and wasn't conceived as a big budget action tentpole, with its scope growing only as production progressed; instead of a major VFX house, he worked with newer VFX startups, and the resulting visuals drew widespread online praise. Who it's for: anyone curious about a modestly budgeted Telugu film whose visual effects were compared favorably to films with far larger budgets, becoming an unexpected box office phenomenon. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a major studio VFX house's signature work, since these effects came from small, newer teams.
