What Happiness Is About
Left completely alone after his mother’s death, Chan Kai-yuk goes from Guangzhou to Hong Kong to find the father who walked out on the two of them. But the man has a new family and treats him as a burden. With no money and nowhere to stay, the young man is taken in by Auntie Fen, a middle aged woman who lives entirely on her own. At first their habits do not fit at all and they squabble constantly. In time Kai-yuk realises she is beginning to lose her memory, and he becomes the person who looks after her. The film builds the bond between them out of ordinary detail, without asking for pity. Kara Hui and Carlos Chan appear in Law Yiu-Fai’s hundred and thirteen minute Hong Kong film, completed in 2016.
