Happy Death Day

Christopher Landon’s 2017 film follows Tree, a college student murdered by a masked figure on her birthday and waking into the same day again and again. Breaking the loop means finding her killer, which is not what the film cares about. The day she repeats is also her dead mother’s birthday, and she spends it ignoring her father’s calls. The loop is a calendar of postponed grief, not a puzzle clock, which is why the killer’s identity arrives late and lands light. A second choice decides the rest: every death cuts an instant before impact. Landon says you never see the moment of Tree’s death and that the restraint made a sweeter, broader movie. The bloodshed the title promises never arrives. Scott Lobdell’s script sat unmade for years, announced in 2007 as Half to Death, produced by Michael Bay with Antti Jokinen directing and rewritten by Landon before the project stalled. The baby mask came from Tony Gardner, who built the Ghostface mask for the Scream films, with a pig mask prepared as the alternative. Shot for 4.8 million dollars, it took 125.5 million worldwide. A good fit if you accept a lead written unpleasant for half an hour and a mystery mattering less than a dead mother’s birthday. Not for anyone who wants the knife to land on screen.
