Heart

Hanny R. Saputra's 2006 Indonesian film follows Rachel and Farel, friends since childhood. Rachel is a tomboy; Farel falls in love with Luna, a feminine girl, and Rachel cannot manage her jealousy. The idea is a friendship that cannot be named. Rachel never says what she feels, and by the time she tries it is too late; the narrative builds that delay as tragedy and brings in illness in the final section. It is an example of a period when such narratives spread through Indonesian popular cinema. The songs were decisive in its popularity. The narrative steers the emotion openly and the final section is heavy. Who it's for: those who like 2000s Indonesian romantic drama. Who it's not for: viewers who avoid emotional manipulation; the film uses terminal illness for exactly that.
