The camera never moves. For a hundred and four minutes the film looks from a single fixed angle at the corner of a living room. Only time changes: the same spot appears in the age of dinosaurs, in the era of the people who lived there before colonisation, in a twentieth-century suburban house, and today. Zemeckis handles the transitions with inset boxes that open like windows on an advent calendar, one frame appearing with another century visible through it. The source is Richard McGuire's graphic novel of the same name. The cast and crew reassemble Forrest Gump: Zemeckis, Tom Hanks, Robin Wright and screenwriter Eric Roth. The actors appear as teenagers at the start and in their eighties by the end. Metaphysic handled the de-aging using a new approach: the face replacement was applied live during shooting rather than in post-production. It failed commercially, taking around fifteen million dollars worldwide against a fifty-million-dollar budget. Who it is for: viewers curious about formal experiment who can accept the idea of a room's memory. Who it is not for: anyone wanting character depth. The fixed frame suppresses the drama, the scenes shorten, and the emotional turns are mostly rushed.
