Heroic

Luis, eighteen and of Nahuatl descent, enters the Heroic Military Academy hoping to secure a better future. What is called discipline inside is systematic humiliation: seniors beat him, officers look away, and the institution regards this as the method for producing soldiers. The more Luis learns to endure it, the more he becomes part of the same arrangement. David Zonana wrote it after talking to people who went through the academy, and most of the cast are genuinely former cadets. The camera keeps its distance and there is almost no music; the violence is shown not as incident but as daily timetable. It played at Sundance and then in Panorama at Berlin. The title comes straight from the school's name, and that is where the irony sits. Who it is for: viewers who like hard Latin American cinema and institutional critique. Who it is not for: anyone unable to take continuous humiliation and physical violence.
