What Herostratus Is About
A young poet makes an agreement with an advertising company to turn his own death into a mass media spectacle that will wake society up. But in the company’s hands his intention is quickly thinned out; the gesture he believed to be subversive becomes sellable material and finally comes to mean the opposite of what he meant. Don Levy’s hundred and forty two minute British film uses the language of advertising and spectacle as though conducting an experiment. Michael Gothard plays the poet, with Gabriella Licudi and Peter Stephens in the cast, and Helen Mirren appears on screen here for the first time. The production was backed by the BBC and the British Film Institute, was the first feature the institute produced, and was completed in 1967.
