Hi Nanna

Viraj is a successful fashion photographer bringing up his six year old daughter Mahi alone. Mahi has cystic fibrosis; she has a daily treatment and her life runs inside that order. One thing she badly wants to know: who her mother is and why she is not there. Her father will not say. One day Mahi runs away with her dog, and on that escape she meets a woman named Yashna. Shouryuv writes and directs. Nani plays Viraj, Mrunal Thakur plays Yashna and Kiara Khanna plays Mahi. The music is by Hesham Abdul Wahab. What is interesting is how the illness is placed inside the narrative. Cystic fibrosis is a subject almost never seen in Indian cinema, and the film gives it not as dramatic material but as the daily order of a household. The narrative proceeds by returns to the past and the whole of it opens at the midpoint; the shape is familiar but the order in which information arrives is built properly. The scenes between father and daughter are the strongest part, and the understanding between Nani and the child actor was praised. The weakness is the last section; the narrative raises the emotional pressure as it moves to a resolution and the placement of songs breaks the pace. Who it is for: viewers who like Telugu cinema and family drama. Who it is not for: the melodrama is heavy, it is long, and the ending is predictable.
