Hi, Tereska

Tereska grows up in a cramped flat in a poor housing estate. She wants to be a fashion designer, but her family's circumstances steer her into a trade school. There she meets Renata and her life shifts quickly in another direction. At home her father drinks and her mother is worn out. The one thing that belongs to Tereska, her dream, slips away from her too. Robert Gliński's Polish film was shot in black and white with non-professional teenagers in the leads. The telling does not try to rescue anybody and does not offer a picture of poverty either; it simply shows how a child hardens. The film won an award at Karlovy Vary and was named best film at the Polish Film Awards. The tone is cold and held at a distance.
