Steven Kenet came back from the war with a head injury, and that injury returns from time to time in seizures. His wife is found dead, Kenet takes the blame and is committed to an asylum. Dr Ann Lorrison does not believe him at first. But his insistence on refusing treatment and the hours he cannot remember start to give her pause. Curtis Bernhardt's noir takes on the mental health of returning servicemen and the state of institutions at the time directly; the hospital scenes are crowded, neglected and uncomfortable. Robert Taylor and Audrey Totter take the leads. The tension comes less from who did the killing than from whether a man who cannot remember can trust his own memory.
