Holes

Andrew Davis's 2003 film follows a boy sent to a correctional camp for a crime he did not commit. Every day the boys dig a hole in the desert. The real reason for the digging is something else. The film ties three separate times together; the narrative makes a family curse and historical injustice its real subject. Louis Sachar adapted his own novel. Shia LaBeouf and Sigourney Weaver are in the cast. It was shot in the Californian desert. Who it's for: those who like adventure films for younger viewers. Who it's not for: very small children coming to it unprepared; the film shows exploitation and racist violence on its historical line.
