House of Gucci

Ridley Scott tracks the marriage of Maurizio Gucci and Patrizia Reggiani, an outsider to the fashion house family, through the fight over the company. The project changed hands from 2006 to 2019: Scott at Paramount, then his daughter Jordan Scott, then Wong Kar-wai with Margot Robbie in 2016, before Scott returned. Shooting ran from February to May 2021 under pandemic protocols in Rome, Milan, Lake Como and Gressoney in the Aosta Valley. The real stylistic decision is accent. Lady Gaga says she stayed in character for eighteen months and kept the accent for nine; the line “Father, son and House of Gucci” is improvised. Dialect coach Francesca De Martini said it sits closer to Russian than Italian. Aldo Gucci’s heirs published a statement saying the production never consulted them, and their spokeswoman Patrizia Gucci attacked the casting of Al Pacino; Scott replied that a story this public is in the public domain. The Academy’s only nomination was makeup and hairstyling; Göran Lundström, Anna Carin Lock and Frederic Aspiras, who made Jared Leto unrecognisable, did not win. A good fit if you take the different Italian accents at one table as the tone the film chose, not a lapse. Not for viewers who want documentary precision or will watch differently after the family statement.
