How Far, How Near

A middle aged man tries to understand why an old friend took his own life. To do that he sets out on a symbolic journey. The journey moves back and forth between past, present and future. In the search he learns more about his own life than about his friend’s. The film builds no straight account; it keeps memory and imagination on the same plane. Whether another person’s decision can be understood afterwards is the real question. It comes out of the formal search in Polish cinema of 1972. Andrzej Łapicki and Gustaw Holoubek appear in Tadeusz Konwicki’s ninety five minute Polish film, completed in 1972.
