I Stand Alone

A butcher who has lost his job and his daughter leaves Paris to try to build a life in the provinces. The voice in his head does not stop. The film runs almost entirely on that interior voice, which grows steadily more racist, more misogynist, more violent. Gaspar Noe uses it to make the viewer uncomfortable, not to justify the man, but the narrative never steps in to correct him either. Philippe Nahon leads. It is the director's first feature and continues his earlier short. A real warning: the film contains incestuous fantasy, violence against a pregnant woman and continuous hate speech. A card appears before the ending offering the audience a chance to leave; it is not a gimmick, it is genuinely there.
